This tree was destined to be cut down. The home owner put in a second story and the area here where the root ball is now has become a footing for the support beam.

I cut out the desired size of root ball I would like to have. Most often I bite off more than I can chew. I can always cut in and then the trench becomes wider and easier to work with.

The plan here is to pull the tree off of the hillside straight into the bak of the truck.

I use a come along to drag the base of the trunk and root ball into the back of the truck.

It took 7 hours to get this out of the ground. What a PRIZE!

It is so satisfying to have a come-along to do the work.

Looking back at this I realize there is very little rootball. Today the tree looks fantastic. I put a soaker hose on the hillside. In a few months you could see little roots forming all over the hillside.

Day 1 7 hours of solid digging.
Day 2 Transport and put in the ground
Day 2 1/2, 3 & 4 I'm beat!

1/2011 In for the night. I will go back in 2 weeks to firm up the tree's foundation and nutrients.

I put more dirt down. I need about 20 yards of fill dirt.

I am really thankful to get help with this one.
